1979 and Carbureted 1980 X1/9's have a passage in the cylinder head that is part of the EGR system. It ties into the exhaust ports and terminates at the mounting flange for the thermostat housing. Accordingly, these vehicles use a different thermostat housing gasket than other years of the X1/9, as illustrated below:
