Front Springs
- Jack up the car and be sure it's supported securely. Car must be high enough to allow for front spring
removal.
- Remove front sway bar at pans and swing down and out of the way. Secure a suitable coil spring compressor (not the type for McPherson struts) to the spring pan before
removing the remaining spring pan bolts. Note the location of special front sway bar bolt.
Warning: The front spring pans are bolted to lower “A” arm. They must be carefully removed with a spring compressor. The springs are under tremendous pressure and are capable of causing serious injury or death. Do not attempt to remove the springs by using a jack.
- Gradually lower the spring pan with the compressor, according to the compressor manufacturer's instructions.
- Clean out the lower spring pans. Retain rubber rings and thin steel rings. Set aside any aluminum spacers. The rubber rings and steel rings are used with the International springs. We recommend that you tape the rubber and steel rings to the end of the springs. At this time, inspect the lower ball joints and inner A arm bushing.
If your front end creaks or clunks, it s time to change bushing.
- Install the International springs, reversing the removal procedure.
Rear Spring and Sway bar
- Jack up the car and support with sturdy jack stands.
- Unbolt the bottom of one of the rear shocks.
- Unbolt the rear sway bar link. On some cars, you may also need to remove the attachment for the hand brake cable.
- Remove the nut from the large trailing arm bolt (at the rear of the trailing arm).
- Install a jack under the rear of the trailing arm to support the trailing arm.
- Carefully remove trailing arm bolt. Now the spring (and car body) will be held up by the jack. The spring is under tremendous pressure, so treat it with respect.
- Carefully lower the trailing arm, removing the spring and spacers. Repeat for the other side of the car.
- Spring replacement is the reverse of removal. Note: this would be a good time to replace any worn trailing arm bushings.
- Before replacing the rear sway bar, remove the three bolts at the center pipe to tailpipe flange and swing the tailpipe up and out of the way.
- Unbolt the rear sway bar and work it out from under the car.
- Rear sway bar links must be driven off the stock rear bar and installed on the International bar. Before removing them, note the location of the links (relative to the bends) so you can install them on the International bar.
Note: Replacements bushings are available from International Auto Parts, in the correct 5/8" size (#34024).
