Every Alfa Romeo Spider from 1966 through 1994 was derived from a show car first exhibited by Pininfarina at the Turin Motor Show in 1961. In 1966, Alfa introduced the Duetto as a replacement for the beloved Giulia Spider. Its mechanicals, basic shape and scalloped sides would largely remain through various design variations intended to keep the look current. Alfa's original "round tail" design, now often called "Series 1," lasted until 1970, when a larger, squared-off trunk was introduced (it was actually more aerodynamic). These "Series 2" Spiders had a slightly more raked windshield, and got a new dashboard with pod-like instruments. US bumper laws triggered another significant design change to the "Series 3," introduced in 1983. These cars sported a black spoiler on the trunk lid. Midway through this series, a major interior revision (the first since 1970) took place for 1986. A subtle but sweeping redesign took place with the 1991 models. These handsome "Series 4" Alfa Spiders were the last in one of the longest runs in automotive history. - Mark Lee
