What's This Thing? Underhood Component Identification in a 1986 Alfa Spider

Clutch master cylinder reservoir. Brake master cylinder reservoir. Power brake booster (vacuum booster). Main electrical junction, always-hot leads. Brake master cylinder. Bosch L-Jetronic air flow meter. Air box containing filter. Oil filler cap. Air flow meter hose. Cam cover (exhaust side). Auxiliary air valve - allows extra air and fuel to bypass the throttle valve while the engine is warming up; causes a faster idle. Vacuum hose from manifold to brake booster. Bypass hose from auxiliary air valve to intake plenum. Idle adjustment bypass hose. Hard plastic intake duct (a.k.a. middle air hose). Vapor hose from fuel evaporative emissions canister to intake duct. Crankcase breather tube from cam cover to top of oil vapor separator. Variable valve timing device (rotates the intake cam, depending on engine load). Upper radiator hose. Coolant recovery hose (to reservoir). Ignition coil. Mounted with heat sink and control module. Coolant recovery reservoir. Fuel pressure regulator. Attempts to maintain constant pressure in the fuel rail to its left. Distributor (hidden from view). No provision for timing adjustment; this is controlled by the ECU. Throttle actuating rod (pushes up to open throttle butterfly; controlled by a bellcrank mounted below, which is pushed by a horizontal throttle rod). Vacuum line from fuel evaporative emissions canister to intake plenum. Crankcase breather tube from bottom of oil vapor separator to intake duct (full throttle vapor return hose). Coolant thermostat housing. Hose from thermostat to intake plenum (feeds the heater circuit). Brass air bleed bolt, used when filling the cooling system. Throttle switch; gives two signals: closed throttle (so ECU will cut off fuel during deceleration) and full throttle (takes the system out of closed loop O2 sensor circuit and richens the mixture). Intake plenum. This chamber is under vacuum, especially at idle or on throttle overrun. Oil vapor separator; the crankcase breathes through this canister. Vapors are recycled through the intake, while liquid oil drains back through a small tube to the crankcase via a fitting on the dipstick tube. Cold start injector (hidden from view), screwed into intake plenum. Starter motor with attached solenoid. Check valve (one-way valve) for brake booster vacuum hose. Throttle body for injection system. Intake boot, connecting middle air hose to intake plenum. Idle adjustment fitting (do not use this to compensate for other problems!). Coolant hose from intake plenum to heater core in passenger compartment. Windshield washer reservoir (with pump attached below). Main wiring harness to injection and ignition ECUs.
