Quick Fix Alfa Romeo 164 Brake Light Warning Light The Alfa Romeo 164 is equipped with the most modern electrical system
found on any Alfa sold in the USA. It’s generally a very
reliable system, but occasional issues can arise as these cars get
older.
For example, if you press the brake pedal and the brake light warning
light* (the one that says “STOP,” and has a diagram of the
back of the car with two brake lights) illuminates on your dash, it
may mean that the brake lights aren’t working. Thankfully, this
is a surprisingly easy fix. The likely culprit is a five-prong relay
that controls the brake lights and the warning light on the dash. A
replacement relay (IAP item #29255) is all you need to solve the
problem.
To access the relay, remove the cover and seal found at the rear of
the engine compartment. Underneath that, screwed to the rear of the
“false firewall,” is the necessary relay. Before
Remove the cowl seal. Remove the cowl cover. Remove it with
an 8mm socket on a 1/4" drive. Once the relay is removed from the
panel, simply unplug the old one and plug in the new one. We suggest using
Würth Dielectric Grease to
insulate the connections. When that’s done, simply screw the new relay back
in, put the cover and seal back over the rear of the engine
compartment. With that, your brake lights should function perfectly
again. Relay installed. *This warning light has nothing to do with the actual braking
system. Fluid level, pad wear, and parking brake are all covered
by different warning lights. Your braking system will continue to
function normally even though the brake lights aren’t
working. |
